Chatty Cathy

Chatty Cathy was a doll manufactured by the toy company Mattel beginning in 1959. (This was the year I was born) The doll was released in stores and on television commercials beginning in 1960. Chatty Cathy celebrates her 50th birthday in 2010.
A brilliant doll during this time, Chatty Cathy spoke one of eleven phrases at random when the "chatty ring" protruding from its upper back was pulled. The doll said 11 phrases when she came on the market in 1960 such as "I love you" or "Please take me with you".
Originally, Chatty Cathy had blonde hair and blue eyes and her outfit was a blue dress with a white eyelet overblouse, panties, crinolne, blue shoes and white socks. Other accessories accompanying the doll were a story/comic book, shoehorn and a paper wrist tag that was also a numbered warranty card. The doll and it's accessories were advertised at less than $20 and is now worth more than $300.00.

My doll has been long gone because I never really played with dolls. But this is the only doll I can ever remember having and I got it for Christmas. I do remember this very well and I know I made her talk a million times.

Atari

During my pregnancy with Wesley, Rick worked the night shift at UAB CICU.  I would come home from work to our apartment at Monte D'Oro - eat a little dinner - then sit on the floor to play Atari River Raid.  I would play for hours and hours maneuvering this ship through the water, refueling and getting rid of anything in my path. I know I was crazy and eating ice cream sandwiches.

25yrs

25yrs ago

Today is Jonathan Wesley Mitchell's 25th birthday! 1/4 of a century ago - God gave Rick and I a precious son at 7lbs, 4oz, blue eyes and blond hair. We celebrated tonight at Mofiaozas Restaurant in Crestline Village with pizza, cheese sticks and a very green golf birthday cake (thanks ML) that was so delicious.

Licking Dog

As a small child, I remember my aunt and uncle, Lou and Ramon Custred, taking me to see a billboard in downtown Birmingham. The billboard is a big white and black dog and its moving tongue is licking a bowl of dogfood. Every time I would go to visit them I would beg to go and see the dog. Today, 50 yrs later, the dog billboard is still standing on the First Avenue North bridge going toward the airport. I currently work on First Avenue North and drive by the dog everyday with sweet memories of my childhood.

My uncle Ramon also was a silly uncle. He taught me several riddles as a child that I have passed on to my children.

Muh Hey, Muh Hoe
Muh Rum stick a Bum
Stick a polly wink cattail
Fall down rat tail
Up against the cupboard door
Sing song
Gitchy, Gitchy, Guymeo

Another One:

Pickle in the middle
and the mustard on top
Makes your lips go
Flippity, Flop

Accident Report

Accident Report

The accident report for the hit and run on my car was ready to be picked up today! Rick went to the south precinct to pick it up and asked the lady (who did not like her job that day) about the supplement report of the witness who phoned in the tag numbers of this accident. A crime was committed, but due to privacy laws - no information can be given on the name of the person responsible for this crime. How crazy is that! I do know that Jesus was looking out for me as my protector - There was an eye witness, the police actually put on the report that I was legally parked, but insurance can't help until the police give the name of the individual who hit me.

Kainaan, Elijah and Libby will be spending the night with Pal and Lala tonight. The box of toys, micro-machines, matchbox cars, movies and popcorn are always on the agenda.

VDay

It was a wonderful Valentines Day. I think we were up beginning at 2am on this sweetheart of a day. We had one grandchild who couldn't sleep out of three so we were up and going. We had pancakes and pop tarts for breakfast, took a trip to the dollar store, went to McDonald's for lunch, spent time with Richard when he picked up the children, Wesley brought me roses, Spencer called and was so sweet sending hugs and kisses from college. After our life settled a twitch, my mate gave me a big kiss, a sweet card and a hand carved couple from the "Willow Tree" promise of love. I can't remember if we ate dinner, but we did retire really really early.

WILLOW TREE PROMISE
Hold dear the promises of love.A gentle embrace bears witness to the love of the couple portrayed in this figurine. Quiet and intimate, Susan Lordi's sculptures communicate a loving and personal connection to others and the world around us. Each piece is cast from her original carving and then painted by hand. Their simplicity and serenity bring warmth and grace to any home, and are perfect gifts for any occasion. Willow Tree is an intimate, personal line of angels and figurines representing qualities and sentiments that make us feel close to others, heal wounds, or treasure relationships to living things. The name Willow Tree symbolizes that which is gestural, beckoning and romantic. The figures are columnar in design, like a tree, and often carry flora or fauna symbolic of human virtues or qualities. The figurines and angels are rendered so as to reveal their expressions through body gestures only… a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. The absence of facial features contributes to the quiet and modest design.

SFranicsco Adventure

Today - America gets a new leader! The three of us watched from our hotel room as B.O. became the 44th President of the United States.

Our only schedule for today was to be at Sutter Street for dorm check-in between 2 - 5pm, so we took a cab to 79 New Montgomery for a tour of the school. Our cab driver was from Bangladesh and he was using very foul language about President Bush. The Art Academy front desk was very nice and sent us upstairs for a tour - Very informative staff, great school, very organized, mucho equipment for film and directing, huge library and students from many different cultures. We had to wait approx 30 minutes for the tour to start and I was taking pictures - C was a little cranky [nervous I think] and as I snapped a picture of him - STOP that Nancy! Who is Nancy? - My Aunt Nancy takes pictures of every move and it irritates me to no end - OK - I will not take anymore of you without permission. My take on this is: C was nervous, getting his bearings, searching for his element, mind racing, figuring it all out, etc. etc. He was short tempered with his mom and snapped at her to act human. Yikes! J was so nice and patient - she just pinched him on the arm in the elevator - I would have ......let's not go there. Thank you Jesus for being with us as we walked this journey.

Then to Pier 39, Bubba Gumps for lunch, I had mahi mahi sandwich, C wanted to expand his palate and ordered [shrimp heaven sampler with boiled, coconut, fried and stick shrimp]. Both of my friends have very picky taste buds and there were times that I was appalled by what I learned. C decided to eat a boiled shrimp first [he had never had one before], I watched with anticipation showing him the cocktail sauce for dipping [nope - picky taste bud came into play]. I glanced down at my food and when I looked back at C - he had the whole shrimp - shell, tail and all in his mouth with this nose scrunched up and eyes wide. Spit it out - He did - You have to take the shell off - I don't like it - Well I am sure you don't I wouldn't either - J and I showed him how to peel and eat the shrimp, but I don't think he will be ordering anymore of those while in SF. We walked around Pier 39 and into some shops, then off to see the dorm.

Cab back to hotel for luggage and C's belongings, a small crying scene as J was preparing for the departure. C was so sweet, while J was in the bathroom, he asked me to please take care of her and I promised I would, then to 860 Sutter Street for dorm check-in. We arrived at the house - very nice and clean - pool table in a large rec room looking onto Sutter - vending machine - sofa lounge for studying or visiting - nice cafeteria for meals - RA office for information. C's room, 310, student names on each door, metal bunk beds, Jack and Jill bath with claw foot tub and circular shower curtain, desk, portable closet and wire baskets for storage. C's roommate had already come, moved in and gone so all we knew was his name, Alexander. The view from C's third floor room is of fire escape exits backing up to each other as you see between two vintage concrete buildings - it is amazing and feels so much like an Art Academy scene. J and I left for BBB while C unpacked and got acclimated.

Taxi to BBB was insane - cabby looked like John Lennon with music blasting, little round glasses, long unkempt hair and a foot that was either pushing the petal to the metal or off the petal - the car was jumping and spurting through intersections out of control. The BBB in SF was not like ours - it was several floors and we could not find a thing. We purchased coat hangers, pillows, black pillowcases and a blanket. Leaving South of Market [BBB], we crazy - no cab to be found. As we walked through this parking deck, we asked a security guard where to catch a cab - they don't come down here, you have to call them - Really - onto the street we went with giant BBB bags and our purses. We looked to the left underneath an expressway - scary - to the right looked very industrial - we walked to the right barren corner - waiving at cabs that we saw blocks away. Two security guards came walking from the industrial park and advised us to call a cab. As they [security] dialed the cab company number - a yellow cab drove up on the other side of the street - There you go - We ran across a four-lane road to get to the cab and as we approached - HE DROVE OFF! J wheeled around to ask security to complete that call - GONE - they were no where in site. I began praying for a ride out of this danger - a cab came from around this bend in the road to pick us up. Thank you Jesus!

Back to the dorm - C has met his roommate from London and they connected immediately with many things in common. We simply dropped off the BBB bags at the door and were off to Hotel Whitcomb. We ate dinner at the Market Street Grill in the hotel for the 2nd time tonight. We had this waiter named Sol.

NOTE: I have this yellow micro bead mushy pillows that I take everywhere. I rub it on my face, lay on it, shake it, toss it, swing it in the air, etc. etc. C asked J - what's up with the yellow pillow! This is hilarious.

At our home, we watch sports, history channel or news. C and J watch movies, movies and movies. I was so lost with their conversations and quotes. I am so amazed at people who can remember this sort of thing!

San Fran

I left with a very close friend and her son for California - J's son is going to college in California to become a film director! I was so glad to be able to join them in their adventure and support my friend as she said 'goodbye' to her youngest son.

Very early flight this Monday morning - arrived in CA to blue skies and beautiful weather - all luggage arrived, super shuttle boarded to downtown, arrived at Hotel Whitcomb [historic city hall building renovation, jail previously in basement, small rooms, extremely small bathrooms with showers, very ornate chandeliers, large conference rooms, white table cloth restaurant, Starbucks on ground level, marble tile, closet sized gift shop with maps, drinks and a few souvenirs, a doorman dressed in black tails with a stove pipe black hat and a red brocade vest, named Larry.] Once in our room 562 - j&l to lunch/supper [lupper], c to sleep from exhaustion, we walked down t
he street two blocks - homeless people everywhere - we turned around and went back to the hotel for lunch. On the corner of the block where the hotel was located there is a bank [closed today for MLK] - at the entrance to the bank was a large human poop, crew socks and a lace thong - Where is my camera when you need it! J had her camera but she would not take a picture. Oh Well... After lupper we were in the room for he night - all to bed early for pacific time as our internal clocks were way off schedule. The room is tense with expectation of a new life, routine, and the unknown of tomorrow. This could be a long week.
